Bank of America is finally making its move to enter digital asset

Bank of America has appointed new senior leaders to steer its approach to digital assets and artificial intelligence, according to Bloomberg.

Sonali Theisen has been named Head of Global Digital Assets Platform, while Kevin Milsom has been appointed Head of Platforms AI Transformation.

Sonali will partner with Adam Dixon, recently appointed Global Head of Digital Asset Transformation. , a remit that includes overseeing tokenized deposits and stablecoins, digital collateral mobility, cryptocurrency trading settlement and custody.

➡️ Playing to strengths

Bank of America has been less visible in institutional digital assets than JPMorgan, Citi, BNY and State Street.

But it possesses a combination of assets that few institutions can replicate.

1️⃣ The largest U.S. consumer-deposit franchise

While JPMorgan is the dominant universal bank across consumer banking, payments, markets and corporate banking, Bank of America combines enormous U.S. deposit scale with a full-spectrum wealth and private-banking platform.

2️⃣ Merrill wealth distribution

BofA can serve a customer from an ordinary current account through Preferred Banking and Merrill Edge, into full-service Merrill wealth management and ultimately the Private Bank.

Merrill and the Private Bank reportedly had roughly $4.9 trillion of combined client balances by Q2 2026, including $4.1 trillion at Merrill and $800 billion in the Private Bank.

That continuum is difficult to replicate.

3️⃣ Corporate lending, treasury services and BofA Securities

Bank of America serves 96% of the U.S. Fortune 1,000 and 78% of the Global Fortune 500 through its Global Banking businesses.

It can provide a corporate client with deposits, lending, liquidity management, payments, FX, hedging, securities issuance and investment-banking advice across one relationship.

➡️ Opportunities await

The combination of these particular capabilities could support several opportunities:

- Tokenized deposits could extend its treasury-services franchise into 24/7 programmable payments.

- Digital collateral could connect corporate and institutional liquidity with BofA Securities’ financing and markets businesses.

- Embedded digital cash connecting deposits, wealth and payments for its consumer and SME franchise

JPMorgan has Kinexys.

Citi has Citi Token Services.

BNY and State Street are building around custody and asset servicing.

Bank of America has so far lacked an equally visible digital-asset proposition. These appointments could be the first indication that it intends to turn its formidable deposit, distribution and markets franchises into one.
