Citi Expands Citi Token Services to Japan and UAE
Citi today expanded Citi Token Services into Japan and the UAE, extending its tokenized deposit capabilities across its global institutional banking network. Japan will support USD transactions, while the UAE will support both USD and EUR.

The timing is particularly interesting. On the same day, Citi also deepened its integration of stablecoins into its institutional banking and merchant payment services through Coinbase.

Citi is not choosing between stablecoins and tokenized deposits. It is building an architecture that can support both:
1️⃣ Tokenized deposits provide always-on institutional liquidity inside Citi’s banking network.
2️⃣ Stablecoins provide connectivity into public blockchain ecosystems and digital-native payment flows.
3️⃣ Conventional bank deposits remain the interface many corporations and merchants already use.
And Citi sits between all three.
That points toward a potentially important model for the transaction bank of the future:

2️⃣Bank orchestration
3️⃣Fiat/ Tokenized deposit/ Stablecoin
4️⃣Optimal payment and settlement network
The strategic question for global banks is no longer simply: Which form of digital money should we issue?
It becomes: Can we give clients seamless access to every important form of digital money while retaining the banking relationship around liquidity, FX, payments and treasury services?

And crucially, the infrastructure required to support it is rapidly becoming available.
The competitive advantage is shifting away from simply owning the digital money rail toward orchestrating the right form of money for each transaction.
