JPMorgan has converted shares of the Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) held in custody at The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) into tokenized securities on blockchain as part of DTCC's landmark tokenization platform launch.
➡️ DTCC tokenization platform launch details
DTCC has officially launched its long-awaited tokenization platform, marking one of the most important milestones yet in bringing the world's largest capital markets infrastructure onchain.
The platform enables financial institutions to tokenize securities already held in custody at DTCC, without changing the underlying ownership, investor protections or market infrastructure.
The full production launch is expected in October, when firms will be able to tokenize eligible securities held at the clearinghouse.
Ahead of that, around 40 financial institutions and technology providers are participating in industry testing.
The first assets tokenized on the platform include:
- Microsoft shares
- Circle Internet Group shares
- Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ)
- State Street SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY)
- BlackRock iShares 0–3 Month Treasury Bond ETF (SGOV)
➡️ Why this matters
This is arguably the most significant institutional tokenization initiative to date.
Much of today's tokenized securities market has been built around third-party wrappers that provide economic exposure to an underlying asset.
DTCC's approach is fundamentally different.
As the central post-trade infrastructure underpinning the US capital markets, DTCC is enabling the native tokenization of securities already held within the existing market infrastructure.
That means tokenized securities retain the same CUSIP, legal ownership, investor rights and regulatory protections as their traditional counterparts, while gaining the programmability and interoperability benefits of blockchain infrastructure.
This could and is likely to become the blueprint for bringing trillions of dollars of existing financial assets onchain without requiring the market to rebuild the underlying financial system.
