HSBC completes tokenized deposit DvP pilot on Canton

HSBC tokenized deposit

HSBC Global Payments Solutions (GPS), the global product line that provides payments, cash management, liquidity, and treasury infrastructure to institutional clients, has successfully completed a Tokenized Deposit Service (TDS) DvP on the Canton Network.

Manish Kohli, Head of GPS at HSBC: “Our focus is on building secure, interoperable capabilities that enable clients to move money more efficiently across different environments, while maintaining the trust and regulatory standards expected of a global bank.”

Lewis Lei Sun, Head of Domestic & Emerging Paymets at GPS: "The market demands 24/7 liquidity, tokenised operational models, and seamless on/off-chain connections. HSBC is meeting that demand

➡️ What this signal

While PoCs are mostly innovation efforts, there is an emerging trend with GSIBs connecting their tokenized deposit products to blockchains outside their internal network.

Why?

Because this would significantly strengthen the utility of the product and creates a stronger network effect.

HSBC with this move.

JPMorgan with the Deposit Token move on Base last year that made it available to institutional clients of Coinbase Prime, the institutional arm of Coinbase's exchange business.

This shows these two organizations are actively thinking about an ecosystem approach to their product utility.

Right now, digital assets are fragmented into stablecoin trading pairs and non-stablecoin trading pairs. But the difference is likely to vanish overtime - especially for clients in developed markets.

Clients will simply execute transactions and trades. Bank's tokenized deposit rails power the cash leg in the background.

That is the future. And the race is on for who can get there first.
