ICE invests and partners with [trade]xyz to bring Hyperliquid perps to the US

ICE, parent of the NYSE, invests in trade[xyz] to bring the $30 trillion a year market - perpetual futures - into regulated US markets

Perpetual futures, or perps, dominate crypto derivatives trading, generating trillions of dollars in annual trading volume. Yet traditional derivatives exchange operators such as ICE have captured relatively little of this activity.

That is changing.

ICE is investing in Trade[XYZ] to develop a US-regulated perpetual futures market using Hyperliquid infrastructure. Jeffrey Sprecher, CEO of Intercontinental Exchange (ICE): “We see these perp markets as additive to our futures markets, not a replacement for them”

The new market is intended to serve retail traders seeking short-duration, around-the-clock exposure across crypto, equities, commodities, foreign exchange and other real-world assets, a fast-growing global trading population currently underserved by U.S.-regulated venues.

But how would the partnership map onto the seven layers of a regulated derivatives market?

1️⃣ Distribution & Client Access - ICE / partners

• Regulated brokers and intermediaries that retail traders already use. ICE mentioned OKX, its portfolio company and partner in the recent tokenized stock venture OKXICE.

2️⃣ Product Design & Listing - Trade[XYZ]

• Develops perpetual futures products, contract specifications and market parameters.

• A regulated exchange would retain responsibility for approving and listing contracts.

3️⃣ Trading & Execution - Hyperliquid / ICE

• Hyperliquid potentially supplies order-matching and execution technology.

• ICE's regulated venue would oversee trading rules and market integrity.

4️⃣ Central Clearing - ICE

• ICE already operates 6 large clearinghouses across the world. It is likely to assume counterparty obligations and manages clearing-member exposures. Its relationship with distribution platforms such as OKX will prove critical here for onboarding.

5️⃣ Margin & Risk Management - ICE / Hyperliquid

• ICE oversees clearing risk and collateral requirements.

• Hyperliquid's automated margin and liquidation mechanisms could provide supporting infrastructure.

6️⃣ Settlement & Collateral - To Be Determined

• Cash settlement, collateral custody and any onchain transfers must be integrated. Question re liquidation, settlement and collateral terms remain to be solved.

7️⃣ Regulatory Oversight - ICE / US Regulators

• Exchange surveillance, clearing governance and regulatory compliance.

➡️ Challenge ahead

Will ICE preserve Hyperliquid's onchain execution, margin and liquidation mechanisms, or move these functions into a separate regulated environment?

The answer could determine how deeply blockchain-native infrastructure becomes embedded in traditional derivatives markets.
