The largest U.S. banks are preparing to launch a shared tokenized deposit network designed to connect traditional banking infrastructure with digital asset markets.

The network will be operated by The Clearing House, the bank-owned operator of the RTP real-time payments network.

➡️ Why this matters

For years, one of the biggest criticisms of tokenized deposits has been interoperability.

JPMorgan's deposit token works within JPMorgan's network. Citi Token Services works within its own network. Other banks are developing their own tokenized deposit initiatives.

But money becomes far more powerful when it can move seamlessly across institutions.

This initiative appears designed to solve exactly that.

The Clearing House operates RTP, the first real-time payment nertwork in the US with millions of participating bank accounts. Launched in 2017, RTP already processes payments $5-6 billion of payments daily. It solves for instant, 24/7 domestic US payments.

If stablecoin payments has a benchmark, it isn't SWIFT; it is RTP in the US.

The battle between stablecoins and tokenized deposits is often framed as a technology debate. In reality, it is increasingly becoming a distribution battle.

Banks already hold the deposits. Now it's time to upgrade them. And this initiative would immediately upgrade millions of US bank accounts.

Shahmir Khaliq, Head of Services at Citi, noted the initiative represents another step in reinforcing the role banks play across payments, treasury, capital markets, and financial services.
