Nasdaq vs NYSE vs LSEG: Tokenized Stock Strategies Compared

Tokenized stocks have reached $3 billion in market capitalization, roughly a year into the current wave of major platform launches.

Trading activity has expanded rapidly too. By September, Kraken's xStocks reported more than $40 billion in cumulative volume since launching a year ago, while Binance's newly launched bStock reached $23 billion in trading volume only three months into the launch.

The growth is rapid and substantial, but traditional markets operate at a much larger scale. Nasdaq’s US exchanges alone matched 184.5 billion shares in Q2 2026. Even a small shift toward tokenized holdings could bring significant activity into the market.

Traditional exchange activities

For traditional exchanges, the growth of equity trading on crypto platforms presents a competitive challenge and a business opportunity. These platforms are attracting investors, but they could also become customers and distribution partners for the infrastructure exchanges provide.

Nasdaq, NYSE and LSEG are responding with plans that share an institutional objective: preserve the issuer relationship and shareholder rights as equities move onto blockchain infrastructure. Their choices about settlement, trading hours and partners reveal different ideas about where the business will come from.

The question is how much of that growing activity exchanges can capture and which parts of the market they want to operate.

This Strategic Edge examines:

  1. Which exchanges are targeting institutional investors, crypto-native users or both?

  2. Which parts of the market are being rebuilt, and where will tokenization fit into existing trading and settlement arrangements?

  3. What roles will DTC, transfer agents and crypto platforms play in delivering their plans?

  4. How are exchanges adapting to crypto-native synthetic securities growth?

  5. And what still needs to work before these markets can operate at scale?

A shared institutional destination
