SBI and Startale Explore 24/7 JPY/USD Stablecoin FX Settlement

SBI and Startale explore JPYSC stablecoin FX with Open USD. And it could unlock a critical missing piece for 24/7 cross-border corporate payments.

Just a day after Visa and Mastercard announced major developments in stablecoin-powered cross-border payments, SBI Holdings and Startale announced they are joining Open Standard to explore interoperability between:

🇯🇵 JPYSC: a regulated stablecoin issued by SBI Shinsei Bank

🇺🇸 Open USD (OUSD): a regulated stablecoin whose founding partners include Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Coinbase and Shopify.

➡️ Why does this matter for corporate payments?

Visa and Mastercard are assembling the infrastructure needed for end-to-end, 24/7 stablecoin-funded corporate payments.

Consider two developments announced just the day before:

  1. Visa announced that Inyo Global has become the first enabler to bring stablecoin-funded Visa Direct prefunding into production.

  2. Mastercard launched its Global Money Platform, integrating stablecoin infrastructure, fiat accounts, real-time conversion and local bank payouts through Mastercard Move.

This SBI + Startale initiative addresses another critical part of the payment lifecycle: converting liquidity between currencies before funding cross-border payments instantly.

➡️ Combining the three capabilities, we get:

24/7 FX conversion → stablecoin-funded payments → local fiat payouts

Japanese corporates needing to convert yen liquidity into dollars to fund USD stablecoin payments via Visa Direct or MasterCard Move could use JPYSC/OUSD market onchain for conversion and settlement, outside conventional banking windows.

This could open another corporate treasury corridor between Japan and global dollar markets, while potentially reducing the need for large prefunded balances across currencies and jurisdictions.

➡️ What needs to happen next?

Onchain settlement ≠ onchain FX liquidity. There are two distinct liquidity requirements:

1️⃣ FX liquidity: Market makers must provide executable JPY/USD pricing and maintain sufficient inventory of both currencies, including during weekends.

2️⃣ Payout liquidity: Banks and payment providers must have sufficient local-currency liquidity to credit recipients' bank accounts, even when conventional settlement systems are closed.

This is the essential value proposition: connecting 24/7 onchain FX and stablecoin settlement with 24/7 usable bank balances.
