Standard Chartered and HSBC complete interoperable tokenized deposit transaction on Swift’s blockchain-based ledger.
It demonstrates what may be the most practical route to scaling institutional digital cash: connecting new forms of bank money through infrastructure and relationships that financial institutions already use.
The transaction worked across three layers:
1️⃣ HSBC and Standard Chartered exchanged payment messages through Swift’s ledger.
2️⃣ The resulting obligations were recorded on HSBC’s Tokenised Deposit Service and Standard Chartered’s own tokenised-deposit infrastructure.
3️⃣ Swift’s ledger matched and netted those obligations before final settlement occurred through existing systems.
➡️ Why this matters
Rather than requiring every bank to adopt the same token, build bilateral connections with every counterparty or migrate immediately onto an entirely new settlement network, Swift can provide a common orchestration layer between different bank-issued digital-money platforms.
Building and coordinating direct connections among banks across multiple jurisdictions could take years.
Swift already connects more than 11,500 institutions. That existing reach can significantly reduce the coordination and onboarding burden required to make tokenised deposits interoperable at scale.
The model does not eliminate the difficult questions around legal enforceability, cross-border finality and 24/7 settlement. But by orchestrating tokenised obligations while retaining existing settlement mechanisms, it introduces digital-money capabilities without requiring the banking system to be rebuilt in one step.
The product that wins in institutional digital asset may not necessarily be the most innovative, it may be the one that offers the lowest adoption friction.
