Standard Chartered Expands Digital Asset Custody to Singapore

Standard Chartered is adding Singapore as its 4th global digital asset custody market.
Institutional digital asset competition has two dimensions: vertical product capabilities and horizontal geographic coverage.
Product dimension often include:
1️⃣ Stablecoins: reserve banking, minting/redemption, liquidity and custody.
2️⃣ Payments: tokenised deposits, stablecoins and cross-border treasury services.
3️⃣ Asset tokenisation: issuance, distribution, custody and settlement of tokenised funds, bonds and other financial assets.
4️⃣ Crypto ETFs/ETPs: Institutional custody, asset servicing and infrastructure supporting investment products.
Standard Chartered has varying product depth in each of the four buckets. With services provided out of Luxembourg, Hong Kong and UAE.
Standard Chartered has varying product depth across all four verticals, with digital asset services already provided across Luxembourg, Hong Kong and the UAE.
But product depth alone is not sufficient to scale institutional digital asset businesses globally.
Geographic coverage is equally important.
- Luxembourg provides access to European institutional markets.
- Hong Kong connects international institutions with Hong Kong and Greater China.
- The UAE is an emerging hub for digital assets in the Middle East.
- Singapore is another critical hub for APAC across these institutional digital asset markets.
The competitive advantage in institutional digital assets is increasingly being determined at the intersection of product depth and geographic coverage. The question is which banks can deliver both at scale.
