Standard Chartered: 24/7 Tokenized Deposits and Cross-Bank Settlement

Standard Chartered launches tokenized deposit services for corporate clients in Hong Kong. Alongside HKMA’s Ensembleᵀˣ upgrade, 12 participating banks can now settle tokenized deposit payments between themselves in central bank money, 24/7.
Could this unlock around-the-clock corporate cash management and investment across banks? Here’s how the pieces are coming together.
1️⃣ Connecting bank deposits with interbank settlement
Moving money between customers at the same bank requires an internal balance adjustment. Moving it to another bank also requires the banks to settle with each other.
Banks can move money between its own branches with its on tokenized infrastructure. But to move money between different banks, we need Ensembleᵀˣ.
Ensembleᵀˣ previously used Hong Kong’s HKD RTGS system for that settlement. Its latest upgrade enables settlement in tokenized central bank money, 24/7.
2️⃣ Connecting corporate cash with tokenized investments
Standard Chartered names ChinaAMC, Finloop and PantherTrade among participants executing live tokenized-deposit transactions and tokenized money market fund settlement.
The treasury workflow:
- Move surplus cash between participating banks.
- Invest in an eligible tokenized MMF.
- Redeem when operational liquidity is needed.
Each fund’s dealing and redemption arrangements still determine whether the full investment cycle operates 24/7.
3️⃣ Extending the opportunity beyond payments
An interconnected tokenized deposit network unlock numerous workflows:
- For asset managers, it brings investment products closer to treasury workflows.
- For corporates, it unlocks more efficient cash management.
