UBS completes its first B2B stablecoin payments via Merge
In collaboration with Merge and selected corporate clients, UBS executed B2B cross-border payments using stablecoin rails.
➡️ Why this matters
Much of the Europe's banking industry's attention has focused on issuing their own stablecoins. But launching a stablecoin requires significant regulatory approvals, operational investment and go-to-market execution.
The more immediate opportunity is much simpler: giving corporate clients seamless access to stablecoin payment rails, regardless of who issues the stablecoin
This pilot allows UBS to gain operational experience integrating stablecoin payments into its existing banking services without first becoming a stablecoin issuer.
It is also an important milestone for Merge.
Rather than issuing a stablecoin, Merge provides the infrastructure layer that combines traditional banking rails and stablecoin networks behind a single API. If stablecoins become a mainstream settlement rail for corporates, platforms like Merge could become the connective tissue between banks and blockchain-based payments.
The strategic opportunity is significant because most B2B cross-border payments will continue to originate from corporate banking relationships, not crypto wallets.
For corporate treasurers, the winning model is unlikely to be opening new accounts with multiple stablecoin providers. It is more likely to be accessing stablecoin payments through the banks they already use.
That makes bank-enabled access, not necessarily bank-issued stablecoins, one of the most practical paths to accelerating institutional adoption.
