Mastercard, BVNK and Airtm Assemble Stablecoin Payment Stack Economics

Mastercard, BVNK and Airtm are assembling the infrastructure needed to scale stablecoin payment volume and economics. Here are the key pieces.
Stablecoin payments require far more than issuing digital dollars and transferring tokens on a blockchain.
Airtm is partnering with Mastercard-owned BVNK to enable wallet-native USDC payments using Stellar as the blockchain rail.
Three critical pieces are coming together:
1️⃣ Customer distribution - Airtm
Airtm operates a digital-dollar wallet serving freelancers, businesses and consumers, particularly across Latin America. Its 160,000 monthly active USDC users can receive international payments, hold digital dollars and convert them into local currencies through its extensive payment network.
2️⃣ Stablecoin payment infrastructure - BVNK
BVNK connects stablecoin wallets with traditional financial infrastructure, enabling payment processing, orchestration and stablecoin-to-fiat conversion.
It provides the critical bridge between blockchain settlement and real-world payment flows.
3️⃣ Payment acceptance and reach - Mastercard
Mastercard brings global payment-network capabilities, merchant relationships and payment infrastructure.
The opportunity is to connect digital-dollar wallets with real-world commerce, allowing users to spend stablecoins rather than simply hold or transfer them.
➡️ But assembling the stack is only half the commercial challenge. The other half is monetization.
Where do revenues occur?
Who captures which transaction fees?
And how do payment networks generate incremental revenue as stablecoins become another payment rail?
These are precisely the questions I explore in my latest Strategic Edge analysis of Visa's stablecoin business, which has surpassed $25 billion in annualized settlement volume.
